Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001) was an American singer, actress, and model. She was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. At the age of 10, she took part in the TV show Star Search and performed with Gladys Knight she. At the age of 12 she signed with Jive Records and her uncle Barry Hankerson’s Blackground Records. Hankerson introduced him to his mentor, R. Kelly, who was also the lead songwriter and producer of all three albums he had released on Jive.
